Ebow

Ebow's time as a 2023 Villa Aurora Fellow in Los Angeles marked a significant chapter in her career, offering her an immersive experience that undoubtedly influenced her creative process. Hear more about it here!

Describe your creative process when you write and release new music.

I love to be for myself when I write, so most of the time my producer is sending me new beats and I sit down and see what I feel. Other times we are together in the studio and showing each other music that we like and then we work on the lyrics and the beat each one for themselves but in the same room. I really need to be in my own headspace and lost in my thoughts to write something, it’s difficult for me to articulate my thoughts before I wrote them down or created a base for the lyrics.

Why are LA and Berlin such a great fit?

Very international, open minded, huge art scene, great music and both have crazy traffic. Also, I love the museums in both cities and the great food options.

What social topics does your music cover and why is it important to you?

My music covers topics like queerness, my Kurdish-Alevi identity and also the struggles I face in Germany through racism, sexism and homophobia. To me as an artist it’s super important to use my voice and talk about my surroundings and the communities that I’m part of.

How did moving to LA for your fellowship influence your work?

It was one of the most beautiful times in my life and I’m really grateful that I could take part in the Villa Aurora Residency. Being in LA for the first time meant a lot to me, since I grew up listening to West Coast rap like many other kids of migrants in Germany. Being in the city where a lot of my influences are coming from helped me to understand the music better. Generally being so far away from home and having the time to just focus on my music was also a new experience that I’m very thankful for.

Describe LA in 5 words. Describe Berlin in 5 words.

Do you have any new projects you are excited about?

I’m releasing my upcoming album „FC Chaya“ on the 27th September this year, a lot of the songs where written in LA and I’m so happy to finally share them with my listeners.
